When talking of world renowned wonders and tourist destinations, China has it all. The Great Wall of China’s architectural splendour, Hong Kong’s cosmopolitan mix of modernism and Chinese superstition and Beijing’s Forbidden City all draw millions of visitors every year, and for good reason.  The Great Wall’s impressive appearance may be crumbling in places but has been restored in others, leaving the tourist free to decide whether to visit the tourist based rebuilt sections of the remote and peaceful eroded one. Hong Kong serves as something of a culture shock, a mixture of Chinese tradition intertwined with the influences of its British rule which gives the city a distinct and unforgettable feel. As the former home of centuries of Chinese dynasties the Forbidden City is one of China’s most popular tourist destinations with its formidable character and huge collection of ancient wooden structures, the largest in the world, and incredible architecture.

You’ll find welcoming and friendly people whether it’s to sell you tourist tat or serve you dinner the, Chinese are experts in courtesy and manners. The food can be as unusual as it can be satisfying, and rarely will you find such a diverse range of cuisine as in China. From recognisable chicken dishes to questionable snakes on the menu there is always something of interest for visitors whether it’s trying new things or playing it safe, just don’t expect to recognise anything from studying your local takeaway menu before you left home.

A country steeped in cultural and historical importance and with some of the oldest peoples known to have been on the planet, with archaeological evidence showing humans to have been in China dating back up to 2.24 million years ago, its most famous proof of its great past is the Terracotta Warriors of the Qin Dynasty. The statues, between 6-6.6 feet in height, are dated at 210 BC and were buried with the first emperor of the Qin dynasty. Consisting of there were over 8,000 soldiers, 130 chariots with 520 horses and 150 cavalry horses, the majority of which are still buried in the pits, the terracotta army serves as proof that the Chinese have been an advanced people for many years and is testament to their place in history.

With so many historical, cultural and archaeological attractions, China stands as one of the world’s leading tourist destinations.  Just remember to sort out some travel cover before you leave (try an established provider like AA travel insurance for this).
