Reading: Abbreviations


Lesson Objectives: To understand how abbreviations are used when reading.


Abbreviations:
An abbreviation is a shortened form of a word or phrase.

Some common abbreviations for titles of people are:

Mr.
Mrs.
Dr.

Common acronyms and agencies that are referred to by their initials use all capitals and no full stops:

VCR IBM RCMP UNICEF NATO

Write out uncommon acronyms the first time you use them:

Example: The Computer Accounting Technician program (CAT)

Addresses

Road = Rd.
Drive = Dr.
Street = St.
Avenue = Ave.

Directions

N = North
S = South
E = East
W = West

Dates

Monday = Mon.
Tuesday = Tues.
Wednesday = Wed.
Thursday = Thurs.
Friday = Fri.

With all of the months except September, the abbreviation is the first 3 letters of the word.

NAMES:

Mr. Mrs. Ms. Dr. Prof. Rev. Fr. (before the name)
Sr. Jr. M.A. Ph.D. C.P.A. (after the name)

Countries:

United States of America: U.S.A. or USA. or U.S. or US
United Kingdom: U.K. or UK


Abbreviations Used in Employment Adverts:

  • FT - full-time work 

  • PT - part-time work 

  • FT/PT - full-time work or part-time work 

  • 20 hrs - 20 hours per week 

  • am/pm - day or night work 

  • eves -evenings 

  • M-F - Monday through Friday 

  • sal -salary 

  • $9 p/h - $9 per hour 

  • $450/wk - $450 per week 

  • $1,200/mo - $1,200 per month

  • No exp req - no experience required 

  • exp pref - experience preferred 

  • exp req - experience required 

  • 2 yrs exp pref - 2 years of experience preferred 

  • min 2 yrs exp - minimum of 2 years experience 

  • refs - reference letters required 

  • avail immed - available immediately 

  • apply ASAP - apply as soon as possible
